What is a fashion victim?
Anyone can purchase a new ensemble head to toe from Bebe or Nordstrom and look fashionable or trendy. However, it takes more creativity and effort to be stylish. To me, being a fashion victim means that you are no longer trying to create you own, unique and individual style but that you’ve given in to the “I’ll just pick out my whole outfit from Express” habit. There is nothing wrong with this type of shopping and is actually perfectly normal for most people however, if you want to create something more then I suggest finding inspiration through every outlet of your life. By knowing who you are, what you want to exude and what you look good in, helps you create an amazing style. For me, I have defined my style as an eclectic mix of both modern, and vintage trends. I love finding unusual textures and pieces no one else will have. I love nice shoes and I’m picky about my handbags. This is my style, it represents me.
Tips to avoid becoming a fashion victim:
1. Remember there are no rules in fashion.
As the fabulous Connie Wang from Pretty Legit said “There are no rules in fashion….except the visible panty line” – this is very true. But everything else is game!
2. Dare to be different.
If your style doesn’t coincide with your friend’s look or anyone in your city for that matter – so what! Be who you want to be! I love what Jane Aldridge from the Sea of Shoes said in an interview: “I’m kind of used to people staring at me like I’m from another planet when I go out, it doesn’t faze me at all.” <3
3. Try something new.
Never be afraid to try new styles & mix it up. “I am really inspired by the Italians like Gabbana, Versace and Gucci. But I am looking it in that way and trying to make my own.” Lady Gaga
4. Steer clear of the stereotypical.
If you want to avoid becoming a fashion victim, don’t divulge into the trends. No matter what, if you know what your own style is, don’t change your style only because of a trend. Yves Saint Laurent said it best: “It pains me physically to see a woman victimized, rendered pathetic, by fashion.”

love the article! those are very strong statements. enjoyed reading this so much
the fourth point said it best- YSL’s quote is the best to sum all up!
I think if you mix classics with trends, it’s the best way to avoid looking like a fashion victim.
Like skinny jeans (back when they first started), with a simple t-shirt and boots or ballet flats, worked.
Or now, a sequin jacket that might be too much for daytime before, is acceptable. So pair it with a simple a-line or pencil skirt and casual pieces to tone it down instead of wearing sequins head to toe
Style on a String :: Because style has nothing to do with money.
i think if you wear what feels and looks good on you, and spend your money mostly on things that you can see yourself wearing next season, next year, or even 5 years from now you’ll avoid looking like a fashion victim. i think the main thing is to buy classic pieces they dont have to be the “classic” classics, but your own personal staples.
I actually enjoy picking out trends to follow, but the key is in choosing the ones that you love and that suit your body shape and own sense of style. I think that is making fashion work for you and that’s when it looks best.
Well put. I totally agree, play to your bodily strengths and be your effing self! panty lines are never hot

Nice to be reminded why being a dedicated follower of fashion is not always a good thing!
